DVLA is committed to being an organisation at the forefront of digital and technological innovation, with a strong focus on embracing future technological advancements and meeting the evolving needs of both customers and employees.
To achieve this, DVLA makes significant investments in attracting and developing top digital talent from across the region. A key part of this commitment is the Year in Industry scheme, which offers university students the chance to take a year out of their studies to gain hands-on experience and develop new skills in their chosen field. Within the Information Technology Services (ITS) directorate, there are currently 3 Year in Industry students contributing across various areas, including Strategy and Communications, Software Engineering, and Software Development In Test.
Today, we hear from Thirowshie Srijeyaram, who works as a Digital Attraction and Engagement Officer in the Strategy and Communications team. Originally from Bristol, Thirowshie is currently studying Business Management at Swansea University.

“My Year in Industry placement at DVLA has been an invaluable experience, providing me with the opportunity to develop both professionally and personally”
“One of the biggest learning curves for me has been working in a professional communications role. There’s so much more to it than I initially imagined—planning strategies, engaging stakeholders and delivering clear messages that resonate. I’ve surprised myself with how quickly I’ve been able to pick up new skills, like writing for different audiences, managing campaigns, and thinking critically about how to communicate effectively.”
“I’m pleased with how quickly I’ve adapted to working in an office with a team in a communications role. This is my first official job, so I was worried about how I will adapt and fit in; however, the transition has been smooth. I wondered if I’d be able to meet expectations, find my place, and develop the skills required to succeed. I believe I have adapted well.”
“Some skills that I’m particularly proud of developing so far are my organisational, communication and leaderships skills. Planning and scheduling the festive winter campaign required me to structure workflows, prioritise tasks, and ensure deadlines were met effectively. I was instructed to lead the festive campaign for December, and schedule a campaign plan, with all the ideas we thought of in team meetings. I was responsible for coordinating and ensuring that everything came together smoothly for the festive campaign. Managing the schedule, communicating with different team members, and making sure deadlines were met, pushed me to become more assertive and proactive. It also highlighted the importance of attention to detail, as I had to ensure that every piece of content was aligned with the overall message and tone of the campaign.”
“Since joining the agency, I’ve had the opportunity to make a real impact across the directorate by managing the Year in Industry blog pipeline. In late 2024, I was entrusted with overseeing this initiative, which focuses on highlighting the experiences and contributions of Year in Industry students at DVLA. I’m incredibly grateful that DVLA empowers its students to take ownership of projects like this, as it has provided me with hands-on experience that goes far beyond what I could learn in university.”
“I’ve learnt how to effectively structure a blog to make it compelling and engaging for the reader. This is something that I’ve understood more with each article and blog I’ve worked on. I’ve also learnt the importance of storytelling. Over the last few months, I’ve enrolled in various creative writing-focused courses on Udemy, which have taught me how to be more concise with what I’m saying and have helped me develop my own tone of voice.”

“Throughout my placement so far, I’ve built a foundation of skills that are key to being a good communications professional. I was involved in planning the DVLA STEM Code Challenge 2024; I attended meetings and supporting my peers conduct the necessary tasks. I drafted a running order, which provided a clear summary of the event’s script. I also helped source royalty-free music for the Beachball Bingo game, ensuring it aligned with the event’s tone and theme. Being part of the planning process allowed me to witness firsthand how ideas and plans evolve into a fully realised event.”
“In addition to my behind-the-scenes work, I volunteered both the day before and on the event day, giving me a unique opportunity to see the entire process unfold from start to finish. This hands-on experience not only enhanced my understanding of event coordination but also reinforced the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail.”
“Through the Centre of Digital Excellence (CoDE) programs, DVLA actively encourages learning and development, and I’m certain that I’ll continue to acquire fresh information and enhance my skills thanks to the opportunities I’m given.”
“Overall, my Year in Industry placement at DVLA has been an invaluable experience, providing me with the opportunity to develop both professionally and personally. From managing digital platforms and leading campaigns to contributing to large-scale events, I’ve gained skills that I’ll carry with me throughout my career.
