At the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), we’re committed to adopting talent and offering transformative opportunities for students to gain real-world experience in digital and technology. The Year in Industry scheme is one such initiative that enables students to immerse themselves in meaningful roles, contributing to innovative projects while enhancing their technical and professional skills.
Today, we are excited to share the experience of Rohit, a third-year AI and Robotics student from Aberystwyth University, who is currently completing his Year in Industry placement at DVLA. His journey has been both inspiring and insightful, highlighting the immense value of hands-on learning in the emerging technology space. Here’s a look at Rohit’s journey and the impact this scheme has had on his personal and professional development.
Building my foundation in AI and software development
“My passion for technology started early. I was just 15 when I participated in science and computer science competitions like ‘Google Code to Learn.’ Since then, I’ve honed my skills in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and software engineering, gaining proficiency in Python, C++, Java, and React.js. I also earned certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and Microsoft Certified Azure Fundamentals, which deepened my understanding of cloud computing.”
“Before joining DVLA, I was eager to apply my academic knowledge in a professional setting. However, I didn’t realise the depth of learning and exposure I would gain in the emerging technology sector. My hands-on experience with cloud services like Microsoft Azure and AWS, along with projects in generative AI and natural language processing (NLP), has fuelled my passion for AI and reshaped my career path.”
Hands-on experience in the Emerging Tech Lab

“From day one in the Emerging Tech Lab at DVLA, I found myself immersed in cutting-edge technologies.”
Working on generative AI projects has been an exciting challenge, allowing me to deepen my expertise in cloud integration and AI-driven applications.
As part of my role, I’ve been responsible for full-stack development, working on both frontend and backend components for AI applications. I’ve contributed significantly to AI-driven solutions, including chatbots, real-time audio bots, and AI-powered task automation tools.
I’ve also had the chance to work extensively with Microsoft Azure and AWS, which has broadened my understanding of scalable architectures. This experience has been invaluable in helping me develop AI solutions that can tackle complex, real-world challenges.”
A diverse and impactful role
“As a Software Development Engineer in the Emerging Tech Lab, I’ve had to apply a broad range of skills. My full-stack development experience has been crucial, where I’ve used Python, React.js, and TypeScript to create robust AI applications that deliver seamless user experiences. My cloud computing knowledge has played a key role in deploying and optimising AI solutions on platforms like Microsoft Azure and AWS.
I’ve also had to be an innovative problem solver, developing generative AI and NLP applications that automate tasks and improve efficiency. Collaboration has been a huge part of my role. I’ve worked closely with teams across different departments to contribute to projects that require diverse perspectives.
Beyond coding, I’ve sharpened my analytical skills by consistently monitoring performance and analysing data to ensure AI applications are optimised and aligned with DVLA’s goals. Attention to detail has been crucial, especially when testing and debugging to guarantee the reliability and smooth operation of applications. These experiences have not only helped me grow in my role but have also allowed me to make meaningful contributions to DVLA’s Emerging Tech Lab projects.”
Shifting my focus to AI
“During my time at DVLA, I’ve developed a deep passion for artificial intelligence, particularly in generative AI and cloud-based AI solutions. While I studied AI and Robotics at university, nothing compares to the hands-on experience I’ve gained here. It has significantly shaped my career aspirations and given me the confidence to pursue AI-driven innovation.
My growing expertise in full-stack development, coupled with my involvement in real-time AI applications, has strengthened my ability to build AI-driven solutions with tangible, real-world impact. This passion has also led me to develop my personal AI project, ‘Centawri,’ which integrates tools like ERIS (an advanced real-time audio bot) and a Jira project manager to streamline AI workflows.
This placement has been transformative, refining my technical skills, expanding my professional knowledge, and preparing me for future challenges in AI and emerging technologies.”
The value of the Year in Industry scheme
“My experience at DVLA has reinforced how valuable the Year in Industry scheme is – not just for the technical skills I’ve gained, but also for the professional growth and networking opportunities it has provided. Through this placement, I’ve had real-world exposure to generative AI, cloud services, and AI-driven applications, all while working alongside experts in the field.”
Rohit’s journey at DVLA highlights how valuable the Year in Industry programme is for students pursuing a career in emerging technologies. Not only does it enhance academic learning, but it also equips students with the hands-on skills, professional networks, and confidence to succeed in competitive fields like generative AI and cloud computing.
