Life as a Technical Team Leader – Razvan’s career journey at DVSA

When I look back at my journey with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), it’s hard to believe that I’ve already been here for five years. I started out as a Vehicle Standards Assessor (VSA) without knowing too much about what the role would involve. A friend and former colleague suggested the opportunity to me, and it turned out to be one of the best career decisions I’ve made.

Within a couple of years, another opportunity came along—to step up as a Technical Team Leader—and I was fortunate enough to be successful. It’s been a rewarding journey so far, and while the job has its challenges, the work-life balance is excellent. Most importantly, it provides everything my family and I need.

What drew me to this career

For me, it was the desire to give something back to the community. As assessors, we play a crucial role in keeping Britain’s roads safe by making sure Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) meet the standards required to operate. Knowing that my work directly impacts road safety gives me real pride in what I do.

Training and pathways into the role

One of the things I often get asked is: “what training is available for someone interested in becoming a Vehicle Standards Assessor?”

The good news is that DVSA provides substantial training and support to bring someone into the role. Having technical knowledge or being an MOT tester is definitely an advantage, but with the right attitude and willingness to learn, the organisation will invest in you and develop your skills.

Why I recommend this career

If someone asked me whether they should become a Vehicle Standards Assessor, I’d say absolutely. It’s a great place to work, with strong employment security, good benefits and—most importantly—a healthy work-life balance. You’re surrounded by people who respect one another, and the environment is relaxed but professional.

That’s one of the great things about working here—it’s not just about rules and regulations. There’s camaraderie and humour in the workplace, which makes the job even more enjoyable.

Lessons learned along the way

Looking back, I wish I’d known more about the role before I started—it’s a bigger, more substantial responsibility than I first imagined. But that’s also what makes it so rewarding.

Working at DVSA has taught me how important legislation, rules and regulations really are. Without them, things could go horribly wrong. It’s reinforced to me that structure and standards are not just red tape—they’re essential for keeping people safe.

Starting out as a Vehicle Standards Assessor and progressing to a Technical Team Leader has been an incredible journey so far. It’s a role that challenges me, teaches me and gives me a sense of purpose. Most of all, it allows me to balance my career with my family life, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.
