Who is the programme aimed at?
The Year in Industry programme is open to UK students who are working towards a BSc or Masters in Computer Science / Software Engineering or equivalent with an industrial placement.
What is the programme?
The Year in Industry programme is a 12-month placement that:
- provides students with the experience of working in a fast-paced, cutting edge, IT environment
- allows students to convert academic theory from their time at university into real work projects, whilst learning real-world experience on the job
- allows recruits to develop their wider skills such as teamwork, resilience, communication and problem-solving
- enhances future employment opportunities for its participants
Learning Outcomes
Students’ experiences will vary depending on the teams they are placed in and the departments they join. We try to match students’ areas of interest to areas of the business based on the information they provide during the application process.
Entry Requirements
Students must be working towards a degree or higher degree in a relevant subject with a 12-month industrial placement element factored into the course.
Success to date
DVLA initially engaged with Swansea University to advertise the Year in Industry programme, whereas today we have seen students from across the UK apply. Students join us every year to take on various technical roles supported by our digital teams. A year in industry experience can make individuals significantly more employable at the end of the programme and we have seen many secure jobs in a chosen field.
