Who is the programme aimed at?
The Year in Industry programme is open to UK students who are working towards a BSc or Masters in Computer Science / Software Engineering or equivalent with an industrial placement
It is a one-year placement designed to give students the experience of working in a fast-paced, cutting edge, IT environment.
What is the programme?
- The DVLA Year in Industry scheme is a 12-month placement where students will benefit from working in a number of digital areas.
- The opportunity allows students to convert academic theory from their time at University into real work projects, whilst learning real-world experience on the job. This will allow recruits to grow their wider skills such as teamwork, resilience, communication and problem-solving.
- The scheme will enhance future employment opportunities for its participants.
Students’ experiences will vary depending on the teams they are placed in and the departments they join. We try to match students’ areas of interest to areas of the business based on the information they provide during the application process.
Students must be working towards a degree or higher degree in a relevant subject with a 1-year industrial placement element factored into the course.
Success to date
When we started the programme we initially engaged with Swansea University to advertise, whereas today we have seen students applying from many universities. 18 students have come to DVLA with another 6 starting this year to gain experience across a number of technical roles, supported by many different teams. A year of industry experience makes individuals significantly more employable at the end of the programme and we have seen many secure jobs in a chosen field.
