What is a Data Analyst?

A Data Analyst collects, organises and studies data to provide business insight. In this role, you will:

• apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation (including the use of business information tools)
• identify, collect, and migrate data to and from a range of systems
• manage, clean, abstract and aggregate data alongside a range of analytical studies on that data
• manipulate and link different data sets
• summarise and present data and conclusions in the most appropriate format for users

What does a typical day look like?

‘As a Data Analyst at DVLA, there isn’t a standard day. We have regular reporting requirements to produce output for the most senior internal and external stakeholders. We also collaborate within a project delivery environment on transformation programmes to deliver business led change. Data Analysts need to be flexible and adaptable, often multi-tasking in an environment where priorities can change at short notice according to stakeholder needs.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to relate to and communicate with stakeholders in their own language. The role also provides the opportunity to use a range of applications to gather, analyse, share and report key information. We are also encouraged to innovate, research and adopt new ways of doing things to deliver outcomes.
