My name is Tia. I have almost completed my second year as a Vehicle Standards Assessor Apprentice.

When I applied for this role, I was working at Asda in the clothing department, I had just finished doing my A-levels and was unsure of what sort of career I wanted to venture into. I’m sure most people still feel that way now. I wanted to do something that was completely out of my comfort zone that I would enjoy and take a real interest in. I stumbled across this position on Indeed and did some research. I had no prior mechanical knowledge and the thought of getting a qualification in mechanics had never crossed my mind, let alone testing the HGVs we see on the roads today.

However, two years into my apprenticeship, taking the leap to apply was the best decision I could have made. I have learnt so much, and even though it has had its challenges, it has been just as rewarding. The benefits that DVSA offer cannot be matched, whether that’s through a great pension, being able to maintain a healthy work-life balance or the opportunities for training and development.

At times when I have struggled with learning some knowledge, revising for exams or lacking confidence within my practicals, I have had access to a great support system through resources on the college website, training courses, or even just sitting down to chat with my managers, mentors or other colleagues over a cup of tea.

I have gained a fantastic job opportunity and have made some great working relationships along the way, so I know I will never have to struggle alone when faced with any problems. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me within this organisation!
