Role: Policy Advisor in the Mark Management Team of Vehicle Policy, at the DVLA

Background: I joined the DVLA in 2017, before that I worked for the NHS.

Working in the policy environment is very varied. On a day-to-day basis, I support operational delivery and projects colleagues by providing advice and guidance on legislation and policies. In some instances, I also act as the final decision makers in complex cases. This all ensures that the Agency is compliant with its legal requirements, existing policies and corporate objectives.

I draft responses to ministerial and other official correspondence, and briefing for senior officials, Ministers and other Government Departments. In doing this I provide clear and concise explanation and justification for Agency practice and policies, representing the Agency and its work to wider government and the public.

The policy team work with stakeholders, both in and outside of government, to develop evidence-based policy. We consider the big picture, understanding the questions that underpin the problem to identify risks and possibilities, creating practical future proofed policies. As part of the team, I have carried out data gathering and research, on a wide range of topics, utilising a variety of sources. This has allowed me to quickly become subject matter expert, and to demonstrate flexibility and personal initiative.

I have assisted in developing and running consultation exercises as part of changes to existing policies and to support the implementation of new policies. I have also engage with industry and wider government bodies to better understand the landscape in which we operate.

I have been part of the legislative process, drafting sections of legislation and worked with my team, GLS lawyers and wider government to deliver new legislation.

I work closely with the other teams in vehicle policy to share knowledge and expertise. I also manage the teams risk register giving me a better understanding of the wider work of my policy area.

I highly recommend working from the DVLA, and by extension DfT. I enjoy working with a talented and professional team, who take real pride in their work. The work we do is challenging and varied. I am constantly pushed to develop and improve. I work as part of a large and diverse team, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. Some of whom have spent their entire careers at the DVLA.

It is very rewarding to see the contribution we make to the Agency and the positive consequences they have for our customers, and ultimately the public. I feel valued and recognised for the work I do, both my managers and the wider Agency.

I enjoy being a subject matter expert and I appreciate that I am trusted by my team, and the wider Agency, to provide the correct advice and make the right decisions. I am able to work flexibly, managing my workload and have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities such as contributing to other teams projects. A personal highlight has been drafting sections of proposed legislation and seeing them become law.

The Agency is committed to personal development, with fantastic networks, development pathways and course opportunities. I have been able to take part in the Agency’s Building Your Future Scheme, which was a yearlong development program. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone, helped me broaden my network and provided opportunities for leadership and self-reflection.
