Success Profiles is a framework used by the Department for Transport and the wider Civil Service to support how we recruit. We use this framework to attract people from all walks of life into roles that are best suited to their capabilities.
Our vacancy holders use Success Profiles to test candidates against a range of elements that are most relevant to the job they have applied for. The framework gives us more flexibility to assess candidates and creates a fair and even platform to all people who interview for the position.
Recruiting through Success Profiles gives the Department for Transport the best possible chance of finding the right person for the job whilst making our workforce diverse and inclusive.
How Success Profiles are used
Success Profiles are separated into five elements.
We use the elements that are most relevant to the role and level you’re applying for. This allows us to accurately match people with the essential requirements of the job.
Not all elements are relevant for every job. It is recommended that you read through the job description carefully to see which elements are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

How to prepare for a Success Profile Application and Interview
We recommend all candidates read the job advert and job profile to get a full understanding of the role and the application process.
The ‘Essential Criteria’ will be outlined in the advert. Success Profiles help the vacancy holder to tailor the selection process to their individual role and we would encourage you as a candidate to consider your evidence in the same way and not to just prepare generic answers or examples in advance.
