Being a Driving Examiner for DVSA

Thank you for visiting our Driving Examiner page. We are delighted you are considering joining us here at the DVSA. We are proud to play a vital role in making Great Britain’s roads amongst the safest in the world.

We look for competent drivers, committed to road safety who also possess customer service and multi-tasking skills needed in a pressurised environment. Driving Examiners have a calm reassuring persona that will help put learner drivers from all backgrounds at ease during the nerve-wracking experience of the driving test. Your knowledge, skills and judgement will determine if a candidate is ready and safe to take to the road alone.

As Driving Examiners you’ll get to see the smiles and celebrations when you confirm a pass. But you’ll also need a clear, calm manner to explain your decisions and deliver the disappointing news of a failed test.

If you are looking for a new challenge this is a fantastic opportunity to join our team and make a real difference to road safety.

Kelly Swift, Driving Examiner

“I was lucky enough to be part of a great group who really came together to support each other through the ups and downs! We had a mixture of backgrounds and skills, which was an advantage as we brought different strengths and weaknesses.”

Our Recruitment Process

Our recruitment will test all the skills we need for you to join us here in the department. This includes an online test at point of application, and you will be asked to write a behaviour question as part of the short listing.

There will be an online pre-recorded interview, which will be a great opportunity to really demonstrate why you are ideal for the job, giving you the chance to bring your skills and attributes alive. It also means that you can complete this interview anywhere and at any time that is convenient for you within the deadline.

Assessing your driving ability

There will also be an assessment of your own driving ability if you are successful at interview. Here’s what to expect during your assessment.

It will last 60 minutes and during that time you will be asked to complete:-

  • An eyesight check
  • One reverse manoeuvre.
  • Drive independently for approximately 20 minutes.
  • 5 minutes of talk through.

To be successful you should demonstrate a systematic, consistent high level of planning and awareness, showing evidence of knowledge and application of modern driving techniques.  Your drive should be well structured making progress where possible giving consideration to fuel efficient driving.
