Communications at DfT
Transport connects all of us. Transport links us with our friends and families. It carries millions of people to work each day. And it provides the arteries through which our economy flows. So the work of the Department for Transport Communications Team makes a difference to everyone’s lives.
From our behaviour-change THINK! drink-driving campaign to advising the public on the latest travel rules during the height of the covid pandemic, our communications have a big impact on people’s daily lives.
Joe Moody, DfT Communications
“After 10 years as a Civil Servant, this is the best role I’ve had so far because the culture is extremely welcoming and diverse”
What it’s like to work in DfT Communications
No two days are the same and our busy and fast-paced communications team use their talent to help maintain and build the reputation of the Department. Our teams have expertise across communications disciplines from digital and content, to marketing campaigns, media and press handling to strategic communications and external affairs.
In this team, your choice of words, imagery, platforms and strategy to communicate to your audience will have a genuine impact and aim to reach the UK’s diverse audience.
What you could be doing
Each of our communications teams offer professional expertise in their areas, and all play a critical role in helping to shape our communication.
Find out more about each of our teams and what you could be doing:
In External Affairs, you will build relationships with transport industry and stakeholders and be able to work with them around announcements.
Strategic Communications is where you’ll provide strategic leadership, identify communications opportunities and risks on activities happening across the department, and bring together colleagues from across communications teams to deliver quality communications.
Internal Communications is where you will use a range of channels from our intranet, digital channels and events to inform and engage DfT employees in a way that motivates and maximises their performance while delivering DfT’s business objectives.
In Digital Communications, you’ll be creating original content for DfT’s social media channels, evaluating the performance and effectiveness of our digital platforms, and working with digital influencers and other stakeholders to maximise the reach of our message.
Media and press
Media and Press is all about building relationships with journalists, responding to their queries, and proactively drafting press notices and tweets. You’ll communicate the details of our latest announcements and rebut inaccuracies in media coverage to ensure greater public awareness about our activity.
Here, you will be at the forefront of delivering creative campaigns related to behaviour-change, working with agencies to deliver campaign strategies and creative content to really change the behaviour of the wider public, whether around drink-driving, accessibility or the Highway Code.
